What is kumihimo?

Kumihimo is a tradition from Japan that means ‘gathered threads’. It is a braiding technique that can be used to tie or braid ribbons, cords, and strings in different colours and sizes.

You generally use a large number of strings in different colours to make kumihimo, and it can be difficult to keep track of. Most people today therefore use a variety of tools to make the process easier. It will also allow you to create more intricate and sophisticated designs that you can make even more colourful and decorative by adding on beads and tie them into the your piece.

Today, Kumihimo can be used for a wide variety of things. You can make belts, headbands, and bracelets, but you can also use the beautiful ribbons to add something extra to your other knitted or home-made projects. It can add a beautiful touch to them.

You can weave Kumihimo both flat and round depending on your personal preference and what you need the finished piece for. It is important that you choose the right template to achieve the correct result. You will find both round templates for creating round pieces as well as square templates for creating flat pieces.
